"Cerco di dare voce e visibilità a ciò che apparentemente è invisibile e che sempre più sta diventando parte del nostro vivere quotidiano. Nell’interstizio tra queste due realtà si attua il fare dell’arte e dell’opera che come “sostanze mediali”, catalizzano nuove possibilità di essere cittadini della Terra".

Sono nato in Sicilia, alle pendici dell’Etna nel 1966 poco dopo la metà del mese delle rose.Intraprendo studi tecnico-scientifici, ritrovandomi ben presto a praticare, ricercare e sperimentare da autodidatta il fare dell’arte.

Agli inizi del nuovo millennio mi trasferisco sul suolo italico, dove ho la possibilità di approfondire l’antica arte di conoscere se stessi (Mistica), lo studio e l’ascolto delle invisibili parole della Natura (Geomanzia), con diversi insegnanti, e in particolare con Marko Pogacnik artista e geomante sloveno, cofondatore del gruppo concettuale di Lubliana OHO.

La mia ricerca artistica è un tentativo costante di dialogo con la coscienza della Terra e con la coscienza collettiva dell’Uomo contemporaneo, nel tentativo di suggerire, a quest’ultimo, un costante e profondo riavvicinamento alla Natura. Per fare questo mi avvalgo degli strumenti dell’Arte, uniti alla mia passione per la Scienza e la Mistica.

Sono interessato all’aspetto “olistico” del concetto di scultura sociale di Joseph Beyus, dove l’azione creativa (l’opera) diviene catalizzatore di un processo che definisce lo spazio a nuove possibilità di essere cittadini della Terra.

Fotografia, disegno, video, performance, sono i mezzi con i quali attuo una ricerca estetica che mi permette di mostrare ciò che apparentemente è invisibile e che sempre più sta diventando parte del nostro vivere quotidiano.

Profoundly inspired by and having studied with Marko Pogacnik, co-founder of the conceptual Lubliana based group OHO and Marina Abramovich ' approach to performance, Calì 's complex view of art entails that every action, every art gesture will interact with nature and life, will impact humanity. 

The artist chooses nature settings of special significance where expressing actions of connection with nature and using digital technology, will allow him to produce the final work.

The use of digital technology for Calì is one of the most dynamic means an artist disposes of today to express his language. In the specific case of Shapeshifter, an expanding imposing body of work started in 2010, comprising of film and printed photographs, film and photography are means of expression conveying performances by the artist that have occurred in a specific time and space, in environments that Calì chooses. 

The focus of Calì ' s art is in fact the relationship of man with nature, and the relationship between art and the world.

In the collection Shapeshifter Calì dares to propose at once an artistic vision of life, of time, but also a chance for transformation.

Life in Calì's art becomes a visionary as well as biologic exercise, where nature becomes a partner in the artistic expression.

Calì ' s choice to connect with earth, rocks, trees, coincides with his departure from Western tradition where nature is fundamentally a positive object of investigation, to give way instead to a global dynamic project of dialogue with nature, a dialogue which is also a performative contemplation.

This way Calì opens artistic discourse to new practices. Calì has created the notion of " digital performance " where the artist produces artistic gestures imbued of sacredness, in interaction with various contexts. His actions carried out in respect and accord with nature, are his performance, digitally recorded with film and photography.

Stelarc, Robert Lepage, Merce Cunningham, Laurie Anderson, Blast theory, Eduardo Kac have all in very different modalities opened the gateway to digital performance, but in Calì's case this acquires a radically different dimension and expression.

Salvatore Calì is in Malta presently as one of the recipients of the Artegiro Artist Residency for 2015.

His residency project focuses on the Mediterranean region, specifically Sicily, Malta and Naples in fact, where his Shapeshifter series will be expanded to further collaborations if possible besides further research in order to continue his work.

Calì's work has attracted enormous interest in many other occasions, among which the 2014 Set Up edition, Bologna as well as being selected with other two artists by the selecting committee for the upcoming MIA Fair 2015 to take place in Milan.
